Statement on the use of artificial intelligence
This declaration must be included when the use of artificial intelligence tools has been secondary, specific, or complementary within the research process. The declaration must explain how the tool was used, indicating the language model(s) or application(s) used, as well as their version and date of use. When the use of artificial intelligence has a broader or more significant impact on the development of the work, this must be specified directly in the corresponding sections of the text, ensuring traceability, transparency, and responsible use of the tool, in accordance with the provisions of the Artificial Intelligence section of this policy.
Artificial Intelligence in the Research Process and in the Writing of Scientific Articles
Starting in June 2024, the following premises related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be considered when submitting articles to the Journal of Politics, Globality, and Citizenship: Scope
Artificial intelligence is recognized as a constantly evolving tool that, within the principles of transparency and traceability promoted by open science, should not be limited or prohibited, but rather regulated through mechanisms that allow for reporting and ensure ethical and responsible use. In this sense, the Journal of Politics, Globality, and Citizenship authorizes the use of AI tools in all types of documents it publishes, including research articles and literature reviews, requesting authors to provide an explicit, clear, and verifiable declaration regarding the use of these technologies (see the recommendations for reporting in this same section).
Furthermore, the Journal recognizes that the use of artificial intelligence can encompass all stages of the editorial process, including editorial management and peer review. Therefore, it encourages all parties involved to report transparently when they have used these types of tools. In this way, just as the editorial team can know if authors used AI in the preparation of their manuscripts, authors will also be informed when these tools have been used during the editorial or peer review process.
On Fair Use and Derivative Works
The journal Política, Globalidad y Ciudadanía (Politics, Globality, and Citizenship) encourages the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence tools by authors, promoting their use in accordance with the legitimate use of third-party information, as well as intellectual property and corresponding copyrights.
It is the responsibility of authors to verify that the AI models used as support properly cite the sources consulted and respect copyright when generating, transforming, or deriving content.
Working Premises and Responsibilities for Authorship, Editing, and Review
The functions of authorship, editing, and review will be performed exclusively by individuals, who may use artificial intelligence tools to support their work, assuming full responsibility for their use and clearly and explicitly declaring how they were used.
Authors must disclose the use of artificial intelligence in articles submitted to the Journal. They also acknowledge and accept that the submitted material may be incorporated into AI models to support review processes, which implies the possibility that this content may be used as training material. All content generated with AI support and integrated into the manuscript must be carefully reviewed to ensure its accuracy, coherence, and support from real and verifiable sources.
Reviewers may use AI tools to support the article evaluation process. When peer review involves sharing materials with artificial intelligence models, the first priority will be to restrict the use of the content as training material. Otherwise, the recognition and respect of intellectual property must be guaranteed through the proper identification of the authorship of the material provided by the Journal within the single-blind peer review process. Furthermore, the AI consultation process must be documented and shared with the Journal as evidence of transparency, indicating the model used, version, consultation date, and the prompts employed, both initial and supplementary, as well as the clarifications and ethical considerations taken into account during their use. It will be the reviewer's responsibility to validate the coherence, relevance, and consistency of the results generated by the AI and to fully assume responsibility for the criteria issued in the evaluation.
Editors may also use artificial intelligence tools during the editorial process. However, editorial decisions will always be the responsibility of the editorial team or the person in charge of editing, who must ensure the consistent, ethical, and responsible use of these tools at all stages of the editorial process, promoting best practices in both authorship and review. The journal Política, Globalidad y Ciudadanía has incorporated mechanisms and guidelines aimed at promoting transparent and responsible reporting of AI use by updating its instructions for authors, peer review instruments, letters of originality, and editorial policies related to open science and editorial ethics. Furthermore, the journal adheres to international principles and guidelines on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in scientific publications.
Recommendations for Reporting the Use of AI in Articles
The way to report the use of artificial intelligence in writing, reviewing, or editorial management will depend on the level and scope of use of these tools, ranging from complementary and occasional uses to extensive and substantial applications.
When the use of AI is limited or incidental, it is recommended to include a statement at the end of the manuscript. If its use is more significant, it should be clearly indicated in the corresponding sections of the text, explaining the contribution provided by the tool, the criteria used to validate its consistency, and the ethical considerations adopted. When relevant, diagrams or schematics may be included to facilitate understanding of the use of AI within the academic work. At a minimum, the artificial intelligence model used, its version, the date of consultation, and the prompt used should be identified. In cases where multiple models, different dates of consultation, or various prompts are used, this information should be detailed clearly and transparently.
To expand on the guidelines and protocols related to the proper reporting of the use of artificial intelligence in scientific publications, it is recommended to consult the specialized guides and guidelines on regulation and responsible use of AI in scientific-academic journals.
